🗓 When is autumn in Argentina and what is the weather like?

Autumn in Argentina begins approx on March 21, with the equinox, and it lasts until June 21, when the winter solstice occurs.

Since Argentina is a large country, temperatures can vary in the same season depending if you’re going south or north. But, in general the temperatures in the fall begin to drop and the days get shorter and shorter as we get closer to the winter.

💭 Why travel in autumn to Argentina?

What makes traveling around Argentina in the fall a good idea is:

🍂 There are fewer tourists. Except Easter and holidays, it’s a time of the year where there are fewer tourists. Therefore, the tourism impact on the destinations is lower.

🍂 Services are more personalized. For local hosts low and medium seasons allow them to connect much better with travelers.

🍂 It is perfect for wildlife sightings. In natural destinations, wildlife watching is more enjoyable. The animals are calmer and can be seen better. Even though, this does not apply to fauna that is seasonal.

🍂 Great for exploring urban destinations. The pleasant temperatures allow you to enjoy the city on foot or by bicycle.

🍂 It’s more relaxed. Traveling in autumn offers a quiet vibe. Autumn colors, lighter air, warm food, good wine or local sweets and coffee …

For all these reasons, we love autumn! And you?

Now, let’s see together some ideas on where to go and what to do in Argentina during autumn.

🗺 Where to go in Argentina during autumn?

📍Buenos Aires

We are not going to deny it: we love Buenos Aires all year round.

But, Buenos Aires during autumn has something special.

On sunny days, outdoor activities such as walking or cycling in the city are much more enjoyable.

It is also a good time to enjoy coffee and foodie tours. For example, you can visit a one of the historic cafés or “Bares Notables” of Buenos Aires and have a “cortado”, read a book or just chill there and enjoy the experience.

Another option is to visit the surroundings of the city and connect with nature. For example, visit the Delta or spend a day or two in the countryside and enjoy the rural atmosphere and its tranquility.

📍Córdoba

Córdoba is in the very centre of Argentina, is the heart of the country.

Its capital city, named as the province, is the second largest city of the country after Buenos Aires. It is an important cultural, economic, educational, financial and entertainment centre in the country. It’s perfect for visiting during autumn and enjoy its museums and walk through its historic and colonial centre.

Outside the city, the province of Cordoba has a lot of beautiful places to visit and discover during autumn. To name a few:

  • Traslasierra valley,
  • Quebrada del Condorito National Park on the Camino de las Altas Cumbres,
  • Ansenuza National Park, Mar Chiquita,
  • Cerro Colorado natural and cultural reserve.

📍Iguazú

Although you can visit all year round, autumn is a great season to travel Iguazú.

Fall temperatures are great to enjoy the destination without suffering the heat of the summer or carrying a lot of coat like in winter.

Besides, there aren’t many tourists and you can walk quietly along the walkways, enjoying the jungle.

📍Esteros del Iberá

In autumn the temperatures are still mild, with some rains.

Unlike winter, the number of travelers is low so animals are calmer and the fall of plant’s leaves helps the observation of fauna.

Every June (before the pandemic), Aves Argentinas association organize the Bird Festival. A great event for all bird lovers or those who want to start birding.

📍Patagonia

▸ El Calafate and El Chaltén

Until April, “Los Glaciares” National Park still offers the same activities as in high season (spring and summer). The difference is that there are fewer people and the prices are lower.

In autumn the subantarctic forest amazes the travelers with its colors. Lengas and Antarctic beeches change the color of their leaves from green to red and ocher making a stunning contrast with the turquoise of the lakes and the bluish color of the glaciers.

After April, the arrival of snow makes it impossible to do several of the typical spring and summer activities, especially in El Chaltén. In El Calafate there are also less things to do after April. However, the Perito Moreno glacier can be visited in every season and is really worth visiting in different times of the year.

▸ Ushuaia

Ushuaia is another destination to consider visiting in the fall.

Between the end of the arrival of the cruise ships and the beginning of the winter season, it is a quieter time to visit the southernmost town in Argentina.

You can visit Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Lago Fagnano and navigate the Beagle Channel.

The subantarctic forest in Ushuaia also changes the landscape colors to reddish and ocher, like in El Calafate and El Chaltén.

▸ Bariloche

In autumn, Bariloche and its surroundings have days that are between cool and temperate, with cold nights. These months bring: the tranquility of the low season and the rains that later will turn into snowfalls.

The transitional landscapes from fall to winter are wonderful. As in the glaciers and in the “end of the world”, the Lengas and Antarctic beeches transform the landscape in reddish and ocher colors which is perfect for photography lovers.

Also, at this time of year (until May inclusive) you can still do several of the activities that take place in spring and summer, enjoying to the maximum the contact with nature such as: biking, hiking, kayaking and trekking, among others.

▸ Puerto Madryn, Valdes Peninsula and Las Grutas

If you enjoy the sea, Puerto Madryn, Valdes Peninsula and Las Grutas are also others fantastic patagonian destinations to visit during autumn.

Although you would not be able to see the southern right whale during autumn, there are plenty of sea wildlife to contemplate in the sightings.

For example, between March and April it is possible to see the arrival of the red knot, known as the bird that makes one of the largest migratory flights: approx 19.880 miles round trip, from the Arctic to the southern tip of South America. The feat of this migratory species is that it can fly for 8 days without stopping and it has only a few stops in its 9.940 miles one way flight, among them: Las Grutas.

During autumn, this bird stops a couple of days in Las Grutas to feed and rest on its way back to the north where it nests.

📍Mendoza

There’s a popular song that says that autumn is not the same in Mendoza. And it’s true.

The autumn colors are stunning. The Andes mountain range, the vineyards and the treesgive us truly spectacular landscapesat this time of year.

The climate is pleasant, with a temperature of approximately 69,8 °F during the day and 50°F, or a little cooler, at night.

Also, many wineries are still finishing the harvest and starting the winemaking process. So it is an excellent time to continue tasting grapes, avoiding the crowds of the harvest season.

📍Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy in the north of Argentina

Autumn is an excellent time to travel to northern Argentina. The summer rains have passed and the daytime temperatures are cooler and more pleasant.

Remember that in the north the high season is in winter. So, fall is definitely a good time to travel these latitudes avoiding the crowds.

Many activities are open to tourism because the rains no longer impede traffic. The experiences are the most varied: outdoors, cultural, gastronomic and rural community tourism.

Some of the destinations in the northwest of Argentina you can add to your itinerary are:

  • Salta “La linda”, the capital city of Salta province
  • Calchaquí Valleys: from Tafí del Valle in Tucumán province to the wineries of Cafayate in Salta province.
  • Quebrada de Humahuaca and its “Siete Colores” mount in Purmamarca.
  • San Antonio de Los Cobres with the “Tren a las Nubes”.
  • Southern Andean Yungas, in the different national parks in Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy province.
